Ning maroons users in dispute with Widgeteer: Open source comes to the users as the last resource

Ning LogoIn the ugly dispute between Ning and Widgetlaboratory, the innocently bystanding users are (mostly) well. Widgetlaboratory used to sell widgets for around $30 per month and is the most popular widget creator on Ning. Users who have spent quite some money also on WL widgets to build up their social networks were left with nothing, when Ning decided to remove all widgets created by the popular premium developer because of some violation of Terms of use without notice. While the parties continue to “communicate via blogs” (Ning and Widgetlaboratory), the bold move is the one of WL to open source all their widgets and thus giving the users the control they need to keep up their networks.

We believe that our customers have the RIGHT to OWN their sites, OWN their site content, OWN their own code, and OWN the right to not be terminated, threatened or cajoled by ANYONE, especially a hosting-company executive.

Whatever the issue between the two vendors really is (and who is right), the users benefit from .

Nokia to open and later open source Symbian

Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and NTT DOCOMO announced today their intent to unite Symbian OS™, S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) to create one open mobile software platform. Together with AT&T, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone they form the Symbian Foundation. Members will be able to use the components of this platform for free from the beginning and selected features will be open sourced over time.

This is an alternative development to Google’s Open Handset Alliance Android program, that recently was said to be delayed and then not to be delayed. WSJ also considers this an iPhone thread.

Nokia recently also acquired Plazes, a Berlin based location based social network platform operator.

The business of social networks and what Google’s open social does for it

Google open socialA lot of discussions about social networks and Google open social (as usual with people who did not have a clue what they are talking about) have been going on the last couple of days. It took me a while to digest myself, but here is some content that might help.

In general, services, such as MySpace, Facebook and Bebo, allow users to create a profile for themselves. Users can upload a picture of themselves and can often be “friends” with other users. In most services, both users must confirm that they are friends before they are linked. For example, if Alice lists Bob as a friend, then Bob would have to approve Alice’s friend request before they are listed as friends. Some sites have a “favorites” feature that does not need approval from the other user. Social networks usually have privacy controls that allows the user to choose who can view their profile or contact them, etc. (Wikipedia)

Today new networks are being created every day, often leveraging existing technology or white labeled offerings but still each in their own way.

And here comes the problem: when you want to be represented in multiple networks because not all of your friends are in the same site or because you have several interests mapped in different verticals. E.g. you use LinkedIn for professional reasons and have a profile on Facebook to keep in touch with contact from college and a login to MySpace because this is where you find your music. It will be a pain to maintain all of these partly definitely redundant data one by one. This is where Google comes into play and considers leveraging that pain for their own objectives (targeted advertising).

If you know HTML and Javascript today, you will be able to immediately use to turn your web applications and web sites into apps. You can also use standard web development tools to build apps. So the idea is that you still build or use your own social network but then by adding you ensure that it becomes compatible to other networks that also incorporate it. Google is the glue to connecting networks. Of course in addition Google will benefit from it by having their hands on the data and the full context…
