Alfresco Open Source Barometer: Windows is an important evaluation Platform

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Alfresco LogoBased on opt-in data provided during Q2 by 10,000 of members, the partner says that Windows is increasingly popular as an evaluation platform for software but that most enterprises use Linux when they deploy it.

Windows, they concludes, is increasingly important in testing and evaluation because it’s on most laptops and desktops. The data also suggests an increasing trend toward using a mixed “best of breed” stack of and proprietary software components.

The survey shows there is a clear leader at each level of the stack but also indicates an increasing trend for organizations to adopt a mixed stack, combining both and proprietary software, to enable use of best of breed components. The survey also illustrated that organizations require the flexibility to make component changes within the stack between evaluation and deployment phases.

Enterprise Open Source Directory Launched

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

EOS LogoToday we launched our EOS directory. The directory is a resource for all to use and provides a single source for the latest information on the most proven software for enterprise environments. It reduces the search and selection cost and time for enterprises researching options.

The EOS Directory bridges the gap between corporations seeking solutions through the Request for Proposal (RFP) process and the which does not participate in expensive and time-consuming RFP processes. Instead, software organizations provide free downloads for companies to begin working on a solution. The EOS Directory fills the gap by proving expert and user ratings, case studies, forums and requests for advice for organizations to better choose the right software based on functionality, backing, project trend and maturity of technology.

The EOS Directory is available at www.eosdirectory.com.

Free WLAN at all Starbucks in Switzerland

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Starbucks LogoStarbucks Switzerland today announced free WLAN at all their Swiss stores. You will get a login with your order that will work for 30 minutes. This is a requirement to prevent misuse, I understand that there is a business case for selling a coffee every 30 minutes of free surfing, which I find acceptable. Dave will not work w/o coffee more than 5 minutes and he will probably get used to the smaller units that will be the way to go if you need to refill every 30 minutes. For John, I do not know how many Soy Latte you can drink in one go. This number will probably be the limiting factor to the maximum online time. :)

Partner and provider is TPN, The Public Network AG. They promise “better” connectivity than other standard free offerings.

CU for a grande banana java chip light or a triple tall non fat latte… :)
