iPizz, Podaholics, Podestrians

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

These days, the trendy way to refer to the iPod is to call it the iPizzle — or iPizz for short. At least, that's what it says at the Urban Dictionary website, a dictionary of slang compiled by its readers. Whether true or not (I've never actually heard it uttered myself), the Urban Dictionary is full of fascinating iPod slang.

An iPodyssey, for example, is supposedly the lengthy and arduous quest some people undertake to acquire an iPod. "his iPodyssey would see him through many Apple Stores and $400 dollars before it was all through," the site says. After buying an iPod, the new owner has become iPod'd — he or she has joined the iPod craze. Walking down the street, the iPod owner — now known as a podestrian — spots another iPod listener on the sidewalk.

Web 2.0 Presentations

Saturday, June 24th, 2006

Bruno and I held presentations on Web 2.0 last week in Zurich at our Web 2.0 Executive Seminar. Bob Get our CEO gave a great introduction on the topic and our Next Generation Internet practice and what is happening in the US. Alfonso von Wunschheim joined us to give an overview on openBC as a Web 2.0 case study.

In parallel some relevant discussions were led during the EuroAjax 2006, also in Zurich.

Our presentations from Tuesday:

Other presentations held last week at EuroAjax 2006 in Zurich

We will repeat our Web 2.0 Executive Seminar in Geneva in Thursday, July 29th. You can still register by email.

I really enjoyed David's presentation and the way he made use of the Keynote features. I miss my cube.

Economist: Gates - Jobs - Ozzie

Friday, June 23rd, 2006

The co-founder, chairman and “chief software architect” of Microsoft, the world's largest software company, would deny it on his life, but the one person Bill Gates admires most for his geeky prowess—and might have chosen to succeed him as software architect—is almost certainly Steve Jobs. Unfortunately, Mr Jobs, the co-founder of Apple Computer and victim of Mr Gates's predatory business instincts during the 1980s and 1990s, cannot be considered available, since he is busy leading Apple's renaissance as a builder of gadgets and software that, in the opinion of his fans, put Microsoft to shame. So Mr Gates spent years courting the geek he admires second most, a software pioneer named Ray Ozzie.

Open Source Practice Dedicated to Building Next Generation Internet Solutions

Sunday, June 18th, 2006

This week we launched our Next Generation Internet (NGI) practice at Optaros to help businesses build NGI platforms, leveraging open source software. The NGI practice group was created in response to the fundamental shift in how internet applications are utilized to achieve business objectives.

Open source software components have proven to be the most effective solutions available for enterprises to build a thriving NGI experience. The open source community has long focused on technologies that are distributed, interactive, flexible, and collaborative – prime attributes of NGI.

By bringing together the

  • community-based interactive model of Web 2.0,
  • the rich interface experience provided by technologies like AJAX, and
  • the agility provided by service-oriented architectures (SOA)

enterprises are able to move from using the Web as only a distribution channel to the Internet as a core business platform for full engagement with their constituents.

Optaros provides enterprises with custom-designed NGI solutions that maximize the benefits of open source and deliver on the relevant business benefits. Optaros leverages its knowledge of open source components and its application assembly methodology to assemble NGI solutions that solve specific business problems in a “best-fit” solution approach.
